How MFA Works
MFA adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts, such as bank accounts, social media, and other important websites. Often referred to as two-factor authentication or multifactor authentication, you must have both a password and your phone
If someone were to try logging into your account from an unknown location or device, MFA would make it much harder for them. For example, if someone tried logging in using their own username and password while located in another country, they’d be denied access because they don’t also have your phone.
Similarly, if someone had managed to steal your username and password but didn’t have access to your mobile device, they wouldn’t be able to log in either. In short: MFA makes it harder for hackers to break into accounts by adding another layer of protection.
The Types Of Multi-Factor Authentication
There are two main types of multifactor authentication: one that uses identifiers, such as a password, passphrase, or PIN. Some solutions may use all two forms of authentication, while others may only use one. In most cases, multifactor authentication will be required to access sensitive information or perform critical tasks on an account.
If a hacker only has access to one factor, they won’t be able to gain access to your account unless they also have another factor at their disposal.
Another type of MFA we will be focusing on is using software tokens. Software tokens can either be installed on your desktop computer or laptop. Two examples of software-based multifactor authentication are Microsoft’s Authenticator app and Google’s Authenticator app.
In addition to these options, there are also other ways to implement MFA into your daily life, such as using biometrics in conjunction with passwords for authentication purposes. Biometrics includes fingerprints, retina scans, voice recognition, and facial recognition technology.
The Challenges of MFA
Multifactor authentication, known as MFA, is designed to prevent hackers from stealing your account credentials. This extra layer of security requires two forms of identity verification before logging into an online service or accessing a website.
In some cases, you may also be required to enter a unique code or download an app from Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator before logging in. When successful, two-factor authentication usually grants you access to your account instantly.
However, things don’t always go as planned! Knowing how to deal with issues that might arise when using multifactor authentication is essential. Let’s take a look at some common problems associated with MFA and how you can troubleshoot them:
- The Code Doesn’t Work: When you enter your username and password, you may be prompted to enter a code from Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile device. If you don’t have access to your phone, you won’t be able to log in! Ensure you always have access to your phone when signing into an account protected by MFA.
- Your Phone Is Lost or Stolen: If your phone is lost or stolen, there’s no way for you to generate a code for multifactor authentication. To regain access to your account, contact customer support immediately and ask them to remove two-factor authentication from your account so that you can sign in normally again.
- You’re Using a New Phone: If you’ve switched to a new phone, you need to set up Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator on your new device before logging in to an account protected by MFA.
- You Don’t Have Internet Access: If you don’t have internet access, then you won’t be able to receive a code from Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator for multifactor authentication. To solve this problem, contact customer support to temporarily remove two-factor authentication from your account so you can log in normally again. Once you regain internet access, turn MFA back on to prevent hackers from stealing your account credentials.
- Expensive To use multifactor authentication, you’ll need to have a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet with access to Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. Many people already own these devices, but they can be expensive.
So What are the Challenges with Multi-Factor Authentication?
MFA has many advantages over traditional passwords: It allows you to use single-sign-on features; it’s safer than writing passwords down; when done right, it eliminates forgotten passwords as a problem. Most importantly, MFA makes our accounts much more secure.
